Deputy Chief Justice of Kenya

The Deputy Chief Justice of Kenya is the deputy to the Chief Justice of Kenya and Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Kenya. The office is established under Article 163 of the Kenyan Constitution. The office remained vacant from October 12, 2012 following the resignation of Nancy Makokha Baraza 〔http://www.nation.co.ke/News/-/1056/1536322/-/xsnnjmz/-/index.html〕 Court of Appeal Judge Kalpana Rawal was nominated by the JSC to fill the position.
== 2012-2013 Recruitment==
The vacant position was advertised by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on 9 November 2012. The JSC however re-advertised because it was dissatisfied by the number of applicants. The position subsequently attracted applications from 17 women and one man. Those shortlisted for the position were:
* Court of Appeal Judge Kalpana Rawal
* Raychelle Omamo Awuor - first woman chair of the Law Society of Kenya and Kenya ambassador to France, currently serving as Cabinet Secretary for Defence
* Joyce Miguda Majiwa - former executive director of FIDA
* Lucy Muthoni Kambuni - former Law Society of Kenya vice-chairperson
* Okawa Phoebe Nyawade - an advocate of the High Court in private practice
The justices who failed to make the short-list were Roselyn Nambuye, Fatuma Sichale, Wanjiru Karanja, Grace Wangui Ngenye, Ruth Sitati, Helen Omondi, Hannah Okwengu and Mary Ang’awa.
On 22 February 2013, the JSC announced that after completing the interviews it had nominated Court of Appeal Judge Kalpana Rawal. Her appointment had to wait until after the March 4 general election because parliamentary approval is required for the Deputy Chief Justice's post. She was subsequently sworn in on June 3, 2013 after the newly elected parliament confirmed her nomination.〔http://www.judiciary.go.ke/portal/justice-kalpana-rawal-is-sworn-in-as-dcj.html〕
